At Averroes Academy, our main goal is to instill Islamic values into our students which they will carry within themselves far into the future. Sadaqah Thursday is one of the ways we like to encourage our students to perform good deeds on a consistent basis. Every classroom has a designated sadaqah jar in which the students should place their money -- any amount they would like, any day of the week -- to be given to charity. Every Thursday, the money will be collected from each grade and placed into our official Sadaqah Jar. At the end of the year, the money is counted and donated to a charity chosen by the students insha'Allah. Some examples include sponsoring orphans, sick people, or schools for the underprivileged. Here are some points to remember:

1. Sadaqah may be given by anyone at any time of the year, and it may be given to anyone who is in need -- Muslim or non-Muslim.
2. Although sadaqah comes in all different forms, in this particular case, we are collecting cash only (in the form of US currency.)
3. Remember that every penny counts in the sight of Allah SWT. Any amount may be given, no matter how large or small.
4. Our sole intention should only be to gain the pleasure Allah SWT. Remind your children that it is not appropriate to boast about the amount they are contributing, or comment on other students' contributions.
5. Giving sadaqah is a very virtuous act which reaps great reward, both in this life and the next.
6. Giving sadaqah is an optional act, and it may be done as often or as little as one chooses. For this reason, the sadaqah jars have been made accessible to the students in each classroom so that they may contribute throughout the week as the please. We have simply chosen Thursday as the collection day so that students can remember that this is their last chance to donate for that particular week.
